Caymo is a language study app (Japanese, and English for Spanish speakers), on the web and on the phone. This page says plainly what it keeps about you, where it goes, and how to take it back.
Who we are
Caymo is run by Code Boutique (“we”). This policy covers the web app and the phone app. How to reach us is at the end of this page.
Without an account
You can use Caymo without signing in. Then everything you save — words, lists, texts, progress — stays on your device: in the browser’s storage on the web, in the app’s storage on the phone. We don’t receive it.
Looking a word up downloads dictionary files from us. The files are shared by everyone and don’t tell us which word you looked up. Daily reminders on the phone are scheduled on the phone itself; no server is involved.
With an account
When you sign in, we keep:
- From Google or Apple, when you sign in: your email address and the id Google or Apple gives your account; from Google, your name and profile picture; from Apple, your name the first time, if you share it. If you choose Apple’s “Hide My Email”, we get an Apple forwarding address instead of yours. We never see your password and keep no access to your Google or Apple account.
- What you save: your texts, words, lists and folders, saved videos, and the highlights you add.
- Your progress: your reviews and their schedule, a daily log of how much you studied, the lessons you finished, the words you looked up, and your answers to open questions in the courses, with the feedback they received.
- Your answers when you started: why you’re learning, your level, your daily goal and your streak goal.
- Your session: a sign-in token, stored only in a scrambled (hashed) form.
- Usage counters: how many times a day you used features with a daily limit (translations, AI feedback, video captions), to keep costs within limits.
- Error reports: when something fails, what failed, with your account id — never your email in plain text. They’re deleted after 7 to 30 days.
- Feedback you send us through the form in the app, with your email so we can reply.
- Subscriptions, once Premium is sold: the store, the plan and its state. Never your card.
What goes to other services
- Translation (DeepL or Anthropic): when you ask for a translation, that text and the line around it. Never your name or email. Translations are stored without any link to you and reused for everyone.
- AI feedback on open answers (Anthropic): when you ask for feedback on an answer, the exercise and your answer. Only then, and never your name or email.
- YouTube: videos play in YouTube’s own player, under YouTube’s terms and privacy policy. To show a video’s subtitles, the phone asks YouTube for them directly (YouTube sees your connection, as when you watch); our server doesn’t. The subtitles of a video you save are kept in your account only — never shared with other people.
- Google and Apple: only to sign you in. When you delete an account that signed in with Apple, we also tell Apple to revoke our access.
- Amazon Web Services: runs the app and serves the dictionary files. Like any web server it receives your IP address to answer; we don’t use it to identify you.
- Neon: hosts the database.
- Apple and Stripe, once Premium is sold: they handle payments. We never see your card.
- Microsoft Azure, only when reading aloud arrives: your voice, while you read, for scoring. You’ll be told before it’s used.
The recorded audio in the lessons is made from our own course text (Amazon Polly); none of your data is sent for it.
What we don’t do
We don’t sell your data, show ads, use trackers or analytics services, or build profiles for anyone else.
Where it’s stored
Our servers and database are in the United States (Amazon Web Services and Neon). If you use Caymo from another country, your data is transferred there to provide the service.
How long we keep it
- Your account data: while your account exists.
- Error reports: 7 to 30 days.
- Shared translations: they have no link to you, so they stay.
- Our database provider keeps short-term backups that expire on their own.
Your controls
- Download everything you saved, as a file: Me, on the web.
- Correct anything you saved by editing it in the app.
- Delete your account in Me, on the web or the phone. It erases, immediately, everything you saved, your progress, your error reports and your email on any feedback you sent (the message itself stays, with no link to you). It can’t be undone.
- Ask us about your data, or anything on this page, at the contact below.
Children
Caymo isn’t for children under 13, or under the minimum age for this kind of service where you live. If we learn that an account belongs to one, we delete it.
Changes
The date at the top says when this page last changed. If a change matters to how your data is used, we’ll say so in the app first.
